Heavy-duty forklift capacity at the actual working point

Choose the truck from the actual load, its centre of gravity, the lift height and the attachment or fork arrangement. Rated capacity is only the starting reference. The applicable mast/load chart, tyre and axle limits, surface, duty cycle, powertrain, braking and route must support the same working condition before the configuration is accepted.

This guide applies to heavy-duty forklifts used for large industrial loads, machinery, steel, ports and other high-capacity work.

How should a forklift be configured for heavy-load applications?

Load definition

Maximum operating load, dimensions, centre of gravity and load stability

Lift system

Required height, mast type, lowered height, free lift and visibility

Capacity evidence

OEM load chart at the requested mast, height and load centre

Load interface

Fork section and spacing, fork pockets, carriage and attachment mass/geometry

Ground system

Floor or yard bearing condition, tyre type, gradients and edge conditions

Duty and energy

Cycles per hour, travel, shifts, temperature and refuelling/charging plan

The same nominal tonnage can produce a different usable capacity

ForkFocus commonly sees the working margin change when a higher mast, larger load centre, longer forks or an attachment is introduced. Nominal capacity is therefore a classification reference, not the final working-point answer.

Review the load, centre of gravity, mast and load interface as one configuration before deciding the truck class.

A taller mast, forward load shift or heavy attachment can reduce available capacity and may also change visibility, axle loading and route needs.

Use the exact OEM load chart for the selected truck, mast, lift height and actual load centre; do not transfer a curve from another configuration.

Nominal tonnage alone cannot establish suitability at the required lift height and load centre.

  1. Quoting only the truck’s nominal tonnage
  2. Using a 500 mm load-centre assumption for a longer load
  3. Ignoring fork or attachment weight and forward offset
  4. Checking floor strength only after the truck is selected
