What is the Forklift Load Capacity Chart
Every manufacturer is required to do a thorough check of the forklifts and place a plate on each of them by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and it must be displayed on all approved service forklifts. The common information that can be seen on the plates The data plate must include approved data from a reputable testing laboratory that has checked and confirmed the listed specifications of the forklift. The data plate is installed by the manufacturer but it is still important for the operator to review, verify, and update information as needed.
The indicated capacity of a forklift can be seen on the capacity plate and it is only applicable to the load center stated there as well. If the center of gravity of the load is not centered in the proper position, the capacity of the forklift lessens. It is essential to keep this in mind as loads come in different sizes, shapes, and textures.
There is also other information indicated on the plate, like the forklift weight, tire size, and fuel type among others. This information is important for the operator to know to ensure safety and hazard-free workplace and operation.
While manufacturers are required to put the correct information on the plates on the forklift, sometimes it can be complicated to understand. There is also no general template on how manufacturers should design the plates so chances are it looks different from one another. For example, some manufacturers include the side shift as a standard fitting, others don’t.
Reading the Forklift Load Capacity Chart

- What is the weight of the load and how is it packaged?
- What is the appropriate attachment for the load
- What is the height and distance needed to safely move the load
It is the responsibility of the operator to know and understand the data of each forklift at hand. This is why it is highly recommended that operators go through proper training and for them to ensure they are using forklifts with durable and corrosion-resistant nameplates. Part of the operator’s maintenance is to also document important information related to the forklift operation.
Normally, the data plate is placed on an area that can be easily seen such as the panel near the operating controls.
